THE PERTH EXPRESS
On behalf of the Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon Anthony Albanese MP, it is an honour to send my greetings to the staff and readers of The Perth Express.
I write to wish you and your loved ones a merry Christmas and a happy new year.
Sadly, this year those wishes sit alongside heartbreaking grief and shock following the devastating antisemitic terrorist attacks at Bondi Beach on Sunday 14 December 2025.
This has affected us all. My thoughts are with grieving for family and friends and for those injured and the loved ones anxious for their recovery. I pay tribute to the bravery of those who responded, including police, paramedics and civilians.
Australia is at its strongest when we refuse to let hatred define us.
I am proud of our community for coming together in grief, offering support, and helping each other heal.
As the new year unfolds, extending the hand of kindness to others has never been more important.
For those looking for a way to help, small actions matter.
Check in with those who live alone. Reach out to your friends and neighbours. Offer a meal to someone doing it tough, or reach out to a local community group supporting affected families.
Together we can shine the light for the Australia that is welcoming and safe for all.
On 1 January 2026, our Federation turns 125 years old. This is a chance to reflect proudly on the democratic nation that generations of Australians created in peace, and upheld through our compassion and courage.
Generations of Japanese migrants – from the earliest arrivals in the 19th century to the modern wave of migration in the latter decades of the 20th century – have made lives here that have enriched our nation beyond measure.
In Perth, one of our first sister city bonds was forged with Kagoshima, Japan. An incredible contribution to Western Australia.
I am proud to celebrate these contributions, and the vibrancy of Japanese language, culture, and community life here in Australia. And I value the many years of cultural, educational and economic ties Australia has shared with Japan.
As this year marks the 50th anniversary of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between our nations, I look forward to celebrating this milestone for Australia-Japan relations as the year progresses.
