New Year’s Greeting
On behalf of the Western Australian Government, I would like to extend my best wishes to the readers of The Perth Express and wish you all a Happy New Year.
In July, I had the honour of making my first official visit to Japan following my reelection. This visit reaffirmed the depth of the longstanding ties between Western Australia and Japan and provided an opportunity for constructive discussions with government and industry representatives. Japan is WA’s second largest trading partner and has been a valued customer of Western Australian energy for decades and I am excited for this to continue.
Our strong relationship continued to progress in September, when I returned to Japan for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Woodside Energy, Japan Suiso Energy (JSE), and Kansai Electric Power Co. This agreement supports the development of a liquid hydrogen supply chain, with hydrogen proposed to be produced at Woodside’s H2Perth Project in Kwinana and represents a significant step in our shared efforts toward decarbonisation.
During the same visit, I also met with representatives in Hyogo Prefecture, Western Australia’s oldest sisterstate relationship. Our cooperation continues to focus on energy transition. I was further honoured to attend the Australian Pavilion for World Expo 2025 in Osaka where the State Government was a Gold Partner. It was an excellent opportunity for us to deepen our strategic partnerships with Japan, showcase the State’s capabilities in supporting the global energy transition, and attracting investment to WA.
On returning to Perth, Western Australia hosted the 62nd AustraliaJapan Business Cooperation Committee Annual Joint Business Conference. The discussions addressed geopolitical developments, the global energy transition, and emerging technologies, reflecting the shared challenges and opportunities before us.
These trips and engagements demonstrate the steady and enduring partnership between Western Australia and Japan. As we welcome the New Year, I look forward to continuing our close cooperation and working together to achieve shared progress.
Building on these engagements, we also marked an important step forward with the introduction of seasonal direct flights between Perth and Japan. This development further strengthens the flow of people, business, and cultural exchange between our countries.
Once again, I would like to extend my New Year’s greetings to you all.
