Greetings to all readers of The Perth Express.
For the first time as Premier of Western Australia I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you a Happy New Year on behalf of the WA Government.
Just weeks ago, I undertook my first official mission to Japan as Premier.
Joined by the Deputy Premier and representatives from Western Australian Treasury Corporation, the aim of the mission was to boost tourism, trade and local jobs, and deliver economic, social and cultural outcomes to the people of WA.
The mission was an opportunity to explore new opportunities with our State’s second largest trading partner and included high-level meetings and events with industry stakeholders, including a welcome reception that was attended by Japanese companies, investors, Government representatives and trading houses.
Japan is one of our State’s closest trading partners, with almost $40 billion of goods traded last year.
Prior to the pandemic, nearly 40,000 Japanese visitors came to WA each year, injecting around $71 million into the WA economy.
So it was my pleasure to board the first direct flight between Perth and Tokyo since the pandemic, marking the resumption of All Nippon Airways’ direct flight service, which is expected to bring more than 8,000 passengers to Perth in the first six months alone.
With the addition of this service, my Government has now secured almost 20 direct flights since the pandemic – affirming Perth’s reputation as the Western Gateway to Australia.
While in Japan, it was an honour to officially open the new Invest and Trade WA Office in the heart of Tokyo’s business district.
2023 year marked 55 years of WA Government presence on the ground in Tokyo, and the new office – co-located with Tourism WA – provides an opportunity for our local trade team to continue to grow.
This is especially important as we work together on our key focus of shared economic opportunities in the energy transition. It was a pleasure while in Tokyo to present to an Energy and Resources Forum at the Australian Embassy.
Upon arriving back home from Tokyo, I hosted the historic Energy Transition Summit, which brought industry leaders from around the world to Perth and had a sharp focus on how WA can help our partners, such as Japan, decarbonise as we step away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy.
Those who remember will know that Japan played a formative role in developing the WA iron ore and LNG industries in the 1960s and 1980s through significant investment and long-term trade commitments.
We want to see that relationship blossom as we look to new opportunities in hydrogen and critical minerals.
The New Year offers new opportunities for Japan and Western Australia to work together to achieve our shared goals – ones which deliver prosperity and a brighter future for all.
