オーストラリア・日本両政府からの
新年のご挨拶

　新年明けましておめでとうございます。年頭の候、皆さまのご健康とご多幸を心からお祈り申し上げます。

　　 8月上旬に着任して以来、多くの皆さまにお目にかかり、貴重なご意見を拝聴する機会に恵まれました。そのような機会を通じて確信しましたことは、日本と西豪州の間に良好な関係が現存するのは、幾世代にも亘り先人がご努力を積み上げたからであるということです。新年を迎えるに当たり、先人のご努力に報いるためにも、微力ながら日本と西豪州間のこの良好な関係を更に緊密なものとすべく努めることを心に誓いたいと思います。

　着任後の最も大きな出来事は豪州の連邦選挙でした。選挙の結果、6年ぶりに連合保守党が政権に返り咲き、アボット政権が誕生しました。そのアボット政権の中には、ビショップ外務大臣とジョンストン国防大臣のような西豪州を地盤とする重要閣僚がいます。両大臣とも大変な親日家で、西豪州で開催される日本関係の行事にご臨席頂ける機会があるのではないかと、期待しているところです。

　アボット首相は、日本重視の姿勢を示しており、昨年の10月上旬にブルネイで東アジアサミットが開催された際に、安倍総理との首脳会議に臨みました。安倍総理は、日本はオーストラリアを重視しており、アボット首相と協力し日豪間の「戦略的パートナーシップ」を一層高め、日豪関係を「新たな段階」へと引き上げたい旨を述べました。

　アボット首相からは、豪州も日本との関係をアジアにおける最良の友人として重視しており、今後日豪関係の更なる強化に共に取り組みたいとの発言がありました。本年は、アボット首相が日本を出来るだけ早期に訪問したいとの意向を表明しているなど、日豪関係が更に緊密化の動きを見せることになると思われます。

　このような日豪関係の動きに合わせて、日・西豪州間の関係も更なる緊密化の道を辿ることが求められています。本年は、2月に日本祭りの開催が予定されており、また、鹿児島市とパース市の姉妹都市提携40周年の年であるとともに、足立区とベルモント市の姉妹都市提携30周年の年でもあります。更には、11月にはANZAC百周年の記念行事が行われ、その際に、1914年に日本の軍艦「伊吹」がANZAC艦隊をトルコまで護衛した史実が再確認されることになります。総領事館としましても、このような行事などを軸とし、日本と西豪州間の交流がより一層深化するよう努める所存です。

　最後に、本年が皆様にとりまして最良の年になりますようお祈り申し上げ、私の新年の挨拶とさせて頂きます。

I would like to begin by wishing you all a Happy New Year, and health and happiness in 2014.

Since arriving in early August I have been fortunate to talk with many people, hearing their valued opinions. Such opportunities have given me a real sense of the fact that this great relationship between Japan and Western Australia exists as a result of the cumulative efforts and cooperation of all those who have gone before us. As we welcome in a new year, I'd like to make a commitment to forging even closer ties between Japan and Western Australia to honor such efforts of our predecessors.

The biggest event since my arrival in Western Australia was the Federal Election. The election result saw the Liberal Party returned to power after 6 years, with the formation of the Abbott Government. Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and Defence Minister David Johnston are some of the important Ministers from Western Australia in the Abbott Cabinet. Both Ministers are very friendly toward Japan, and I hope we might have the opportunity to have them attend Japan-related events here in Western Australia.

Prime Minister Abbott has indicated the importance of Japan to Australia, and at the beginning of October last year he held a meeting with Prime Minister Abe during the Brunei East Asia Summit. Prime Minister Abe said the Government of Japan attaches importance to Australia, and that he would like to cooperate with Prime Minister Abbott to further advance the “strategic partnership” between Japan and Australia and to elevate the bilateral relations to “a new stage.” Prime Minister Abbott said that Australia also values its relationship with Japan as Australia's “best friend in Asia,” and that he wants to jointly engage further in strengthening Japan-Australia relations going forward. Prime Minister Abbott expressed his intention to visit Japan as soon as possible this year, which can be seen as a move to make Japan-Australia relations even closer.

It stands to reason that as these kinds of moves are made to bring the Japan-Australia relationship closer, we can expect the Japan-Western Australia relationship to follow in kind, and become even closer. This year will see the Japan Festival in Perth, scheduled to be held in February, the 40th anniversary celebration for the Kagoshima-Perth sister city relationship, and the 30th anniversary celebration for the Adachi-Belmont sister city relationship. In addition, the ANZAC Centenary commemoration will be held in November, and the historical facts of the Japanese Warship Ibuki, which escorted ANZAC troops from Albany to Turkey in 1914, will be reaffirmed at that time. It is our desire at the Consulate-General of Japan to utilize events such as these to deepen exchange between Japan and Western Australia.
