オーストラリア・日本両政府からの
新年のご挨拶

I am once again delighted to express my best wishes for the New Year to the Japanese community of Western Australia and to all readers of The Perth Express.

The Perth Express plays an important role in informing the Japanese community of Perth and the many West Australians who have a keen interest in Japan and the Japanese language.

Western Australia and Japan enjoy cultural and trade ties, enhanced by trade and investment in our resources sector, and a strong Sister-State relationship with Hyogo Prefecture, now in its 33rd year, along with a number of Sister-City relationships.

Western Australian trade with Japan, our second largest trading partner, continues to thrive and Japanese companies have a very welcome presence in our State in many different sectors. I look forward to these links growing in 2014.

While the resources sector will continue to provide new opportunities for collaboration between Japan and Western Australia, there are many other examples of other Western Australian industries, for example, in agriculture, for Japanese companies and Western Australia to develop Japan-specific products for the future.

In June 2013, I reaffirmed my commitment to our vital friendship during a visit to Japan, where I met with companies and organisations integral to our relationship.

Under the Hyogo Prefecture-Western Australia Sister-State relationship, cultural exchanges included a special fashion parade of garments created using Banshu textiles at Perth Fashion Week in September 2013. Two participants also presented their designs at the Perth Fashion Week Designer Collections and were featured in local media as Western Australian designers who were benefiting from the State's strong links to Japan.

A Hyogo Friendship Garden in the grounds of Dumas House in West Perth was opened in May this year. The garden was presented to our State by the Hyogo Prefectural Government and features unique tiles from Awaji Island in Hyogo.

On 17 November 2013, two Perth runners participated in the Kobe Marathon representing Western Australia, again as part of the Hyogo Sister-State relationship. In the women's section, Tina Major was awarded overall seventh place, an outstanding effort, and in the men's section Roberto Busi ran a very commendable twenty-third place.

While on a sporting note, I congratulate Tokyo for being chosen to host the Olympics in 2020.

I look forward to hearing more about the many wonderful events being planned for 2014 including the Japan Festival in February, and to continuing to foster the harmonious relationship between our State and Japan.

　本年もまた、西豪州の日本人コミュニティの皆様、そしてパースエクスプレスの読者の皆様に新年のご挨拶をさせていただけることを、非常に嬉しく思います。

　パースエクスプレスは、パースにおける日本人コミュニティや、日本、そして日本語に強く興味をもつ多くの西豪州の人々へ情報を提供するといった重要な役割を果たしています。

　さて、西豪州と日本は貿易や資源への投資、また今年で33周年目を迎える兵庫県を代表とする姉妹州提携などにより、文化や経済面でも密接な関係を築いています。

　西豪州にとって、日本は2番目に大きな貿易相手国であり、引き続き貿易を盛んに行い、在西豪州の各日系企業も様々な部門において歓迎されるべき存在となっております。2014年も、この関係がより一層発展することを期待しています。

　資源産業が、これからも日本と西豪州の提携において新たな機会を提供することとなるでしょうが、その一方で農業などのように、将来的に日系企業と共に日本向け製品を開発していくであろう産業は、西豪州にはたくさんあります。

　2013年6月に日本を訪問した際、関係企業や団体の方々にお会いし、日本との極めて重要な友好関係をより確かなものにすべきだと再確認しました。

　兵庫県と西豪州の姉妹州提携において、文化交流として播州織を用いた洋服が2013年9月に催されましたパース・ファッションウィークにて特別に披露されました。そして、パース・ファッションウィーク・デザイナーコレクションにて作品を発表した2名の参加者が、地元メディアに取り上げられ、西豪州と日本との協力関係から恩恵を受けているデザイナーとして紹介されました。

　さらに、昨年5月には兵庫フレンドシップ・ガーデンが、ウエストパースのデュマハウス前にオープンしました。当ガーデンは、兵庫県より西豪州へ寄贈されたもので、兵庫県淡路島からの独特なタイルが特徴となっています。

　また、2013年11月17日には兵庫県との姉妹州提携の一環として、西豪州を代表とする2名のランナーが神戸マラソンに参加しました。Tina Majorさんが女性部門の総合7位に入賞、Roberto Busiさんは男性部門の23位と素晴らしい結果を残しました。

　そしてスポーツに関して、東京が2020年オリンピックの開催都市として選ばれましたことを、心よりお祝い申し上げます。

　本年2月に開催されます日本祭りのように、今後計画されます数々のイベントについて楽しみにしているのと共に、これからも西豪州と日本との調和的な関係が引き続き築き上げられることを期待しております。
