Actually, Tahawndam is about a five-day
walk from the Chinese border. On the Chinese side, you can buy a small
300W generator which can be carried back to the village and mounted on
the river, which has a five-meter drop, to produce electricity. A fully
charged battery will provide enough power to last 24 hours. The residents
of Rangoon, who suffer from perennial power shortages, would be amazed
to hear about this.
That night, a large number of villagers
gathered to greet the outsiders. In the room with the television, karaoke
VCDs were played. Everyone watched the Burmese and Kachin-language (Jingphaw)
videos with interest, but remained silent. Then someone put in a Tibetan
VCD, and some of the young people and children began to hum along.
